Strange Cambodian Fruit – Egg Fruit

This is a strange fruit I picked up at the market a couple of days ago. I first tried this when I was here last year. I’ve never seen it before I came to Cambodia. It’s called a “See-daa (សុីដ ា)”  in Khmer.


The texture inside is very dry rather than juicy. It is extremely sweet and the flesh is soft. It also has a very distinct aroma/smell when it is ripe. There is one large stone in the centre of the fruit.I bought some last week at the market and the woman charged me 1000 riels (4000 riels makes 1US $) per fruit (which is expensive for here and I had a feeling she overcharged me as a foreigner-I hate that!) I thought she meant per kilo, otherwise I would’ve picked the largest fruits.


Two days ago I bought the same fruit again from a different stall-and she charged me 1500 riels for 2. So with joy I bought four of the largest she had.

I’ve ate two and don’t feel like any more now-they are so damn sweet. I got over excited at thinking I was getting a bargain. (I often get over excited buying food! ) I’ll go and buy a blender tomorrow and see if I can make an ice smoothie drink out of it. Otherwise they’ll go bad. And I always have a little guilt feeling when I let good food go bad. That’s another story I’ll go into at some point in the future.

Oh in case you’re wondering why I love to cook and don’t have a blender? I have only been here in Siem Reap, Cambodia 2 1/2 months now. I’ve only just rented this room I live in since 1 1/2 months. So I’m building up a new kitchen from scratch (for the umpteenth time).

And I LOVE buying new kitchen stuff (like my mum).

Oh I forgot the name (I’m terrible with names) of the fruit. I’ll add the name tomorrow.

Note added 17th  September 2012:

This fruit is called an egg fruit, canistel or yellow sapote. I found the English name by chance on a Cambodian fruit poster at the clinic I attended with dengue fever.

    Hi and thanks for your story. I think you call the name of this egg fruit as a See-Daa is wrong. It called an “Am-Puk” (អំពុក៑). See-Daa is kind of egg fruit with brown sweet juicy soft meat. It looks like a Kiwi fruit without tiny hairs. There is another egg fruit similar to See-Daa called “Lo-Mutt” (ល្មុត). I believe you confused the Khmer fruit sellers called egg fruits because they did not have proper names in English. I suggest we should call “Am-Puk” as a “Egg Yolk fruit or Yolk fruit” rather than just egg fruit. I escaped from Cambodia as a refugee living in Thailand and came to dwell in Sydney, Australia in April 1981. I call Australia is my home country and Cambodia is my birth country. I live here is longer than over there. My dream is to wish and hope Cambodia becoming a true democratic society in a very near future, National election day on 28/07/13. Thanks.

    • Thank you so much for the information!! My partner (she is Khmei) told me that the lomutt is the sapodilla in English?? I love Cambodia. I grew up in London. Although Asian (Bangladeshi) by birth. You can speak, read and write Khmer? That’s wonderful!! I’m learning very slowly. I can’t seem to find any Khmer people in London or Germany. I know there must be a few that settled in these countries over the years.

        I believe the English name is Canistel. It is delicious but most people can’t eat more than one fruit. The starchy dried taste makes it difficult to eat. However after I found its health benefits, I will force myself to eat more. Please share this information on Canistel fruit.

        Canistel fruit is a natural remedy for treatment and management of arthritis. This is because the fruit is rich in minerals that eliminate the symptoms of arthritis.

    Hi There, you two, I am Khmer living in Switzerland. I know at least one Khmer family in London :). There are many refugees in Europe. Maybe in London are not so many Khmer’s like Germany or France. The most refugees went to America Canada and France. I came here to Switzerland with 6 Years old, but I still can speak Khmer and read very little bit. I don’t know this eggfruit, but it looks interesting with this heart shapped.

    There are a lot more weird fruits u haven’t seen…. I Don’t know y.. but us Cambodian just happen to have very strange fruits.. but delicious..yuuuummmm
