My First Tastes of Cambodia

Here are some pics from my first eating out experiences last year in Phnom Penh-first time in Cambodia and knowing nothing of the cuisine, culture, life or the people here!! So much has changed since then:-)

This could easily be a restaurant review if I could remember  the name of the place I ate. The food was delicious!!

A traditional Khmer curry with chicken this time. A dish I’ve ate many times and love. Will at some point make it and put the recipe on my blog…..as with all of  the dishes below too!!

Another dish from the same restaurant as above. It’s a river fish wrapped and fried in banana leaf with Khmer spices. The dish is called “Knopp” in Khmer!

This dish is called “Chien Chuan”. It’s fish cooked with ginger and soya beans amongst other spices! My first street food here. And loved it!!

This dish is called “Ban Chiew”. Another of my favourites I’ve had many times since being here. It’s a pancake made from rice flour (if I’ve understood correctly from my GF right now) egg and turmeric. It’s filled with a mince pork filling. And what I love most that is very common with many of their dishes is the delicious sauce and huge variety of unidentifiable leaves of very different tastes-some tangy and some even strangely fishy, that go with it!

Thank you very much for dropping by and I appreciate all of your comments. I wish you a beautiful day, a peaceful mind and a warm heart:-)

  1. All of it looks quite good. 🙂 I’ve made Ban Chiew at home – although it’s been quite a few years – and really enjoyed it. I tried a ground pork filling as well as one with shrimp. I like the lightness of the dish as well as the fact that like with all “wraps” you can customize the filling to your taste. I always thought it was a Vietnamese dish though. Maybe the Cambodians and Vietnamese each have their own version.

    • I haven’t been to Vietnam yet so I don’t know. The culinary world does overlap a fair bit though through Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia!
